Post 7: High school vs College
I never really grasped academic writing in high school until senior year when we wrote our senior thesis'. This taught me how to be prepared for college and to research my topics properly. Before doing complete research I would just wing it off of my own ideas and did not have professionals back me up. McClure's essay about "Googlepedia: Turning Information Behaviors into Research Skills" talks about which sources are creditable and which are not. Before taking this class and my senior thesis class I would just use Google or Wikipedia for information and not websites such s google scholar to find good sources. Another difference is using the first person in college writing. this is a lot different from high school where you would almost be crucified if you were to use the first person on a paper. Maddalena states, "First of all, the more “voices” you add to the conversation, the more confusing it gets. You must separate your own interpretations of scholars’ claims, the claims themselves, and your argument so as not to misrepresent any of them." this makes a lot of sense to me because in high school I would get so confused and lost in my own words and never know which character is actually talking (Maddalena). Overall this makes college writing almost easier than high school writing without the first person.
After reading Maddelena, I am going to insert "I" into my essay. It is supposed to be a persuasive essay (or at least it is what I want it to be) and the reader needs to see my stand on the issue. Or at least I am thinking this is true. High school is no help to me....1974 was a very long time ago.
ReplyDeleteAnd it is hard to break away from Googlepedia research. Used it this morning in fact to find out about some acronym that I saw in the news.
I am still in high school, and I tend to wing things a lot too. I don't do good research normally but this collage class has helped me a ton with finding more sources and using them properly. I also am not use to using I in an essay but after reading Maddelena and with the help of this class i am gonna branch out on my writings.
